英文摘要:Speaking of monsters, we will always regard it as mysterious. People always have a variety of imaginations to monsters: they are always imagined as formless, sublime, abstract, evil, ugly and so on. Most would love to exaggerate and render them an enormous power, and they will never forget to add any exaggerated details in their narratives. The monster stories have a long history: some monsters are from Nature, some fictive, and some transformed from mankind. In ancient notion, the catastrophe of nature, derived from God's anger, embodies the natural elements as the monster images—the monsters come and the catastrophe ensues. Many monster stories—in Asia, Europe, Africa, and America—are derived from the forests, lakes, seas. The ancestors evolve from hunting and nomad areas to forests, ocean, sky, universe, and stars. If we combine mythology and one’s cosmology, we can never find it difficult that the monsters are closely related to our environments. Yao (妖), in Chinese, is a creature commonly thought of as weird, abnormal and evil. The Yao-Guai(妖怪), for instance, stands for the creature that will harm mankind. Guai(怪), an abnormal creature, are commonly meant to be weird and uncommon; the expression “Guai-wu” (怪物) is an example. The monster stories always come with the specialty of local religion, rendering us a more fantastic imagination about the formless world. This study attempts to explore and describe the religious and monster cults in Taiwan. Also, this study aims to find a style that belongs to me from the monster images found in my researches and my visits to the areas with the monster legends by analyzing the images and word descriptions. This creative research aims to embody the monster in the Taiwanese folklores by my original creation of them. The significance of this study is not merely the literature analysis and cultural presentation of the monster legends, but also a deeper understanding and interpretation with modern cultures. All this will solidify the local specialty and positioning, ensure the values of the artistic expressions, and render the designing more developmental and original.
